How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Party Venue in Canmore? (2026)

If you've started phoning around Canmore for a place to hold a birthday, a shower or a family reunion, you've probably noticed that about half the venues won't tell you a price until you fill in a form. The other half publish their rates, but the number on the website is rarely the number you end up paying.

We run a venue in Canmore, and we publish our prices, so we've pulled together every published hall and party-venue rate in town that we could find, along with the costs that sit on top of the room: cleaning fees, deposits, AV, the liquor licence, insurance, catering and cake. Where we're comparing ourselves with other venues we've tried to be fair, including where somebody else is the better fit.

All prices are in Canadian dollars, before GST, and were checked in September 2026. Rates change, so confirm with the venue before you book.

The Short Answer

For a room alone, a party in Canmore costs roughly:

  • $25–$80 an hour for a basic municipal room or church hall, before deposits and cleanup.

  • $105–$250 an hour, or roughly $450–$1,400 for a half or full day, for a dedicated event hall with a kitchen or bar.

  • $1,000–$3,800 for a large hall on a peak-season Saturday, or for a golf-club or banquet package with service charges.

Once you add food, drinks and the small stuff, a 30-person shower usually lands between $800 and $1,800 all-in, and an 80-person milestone birthday between $3,500 and $7,000. The worked budgets further down show where that money goes.

Venues that don't publish prices include CanMore Together (its bachelorette page mentions "from $500"), CanGOLF, the Canmore Legion, artsPlace, The Sensory, the hotels (the Malcolm, Coast Canmore, Canmore Inn & Suites, Silvertip) and MAINSPACE. That doesn't mean they're expensive, just that you'll need to ask.

What the Number on the Website Doesn't Include

This is where most party budgets go wrong. The room rate is rarely the whole cost of the room.

  • Cleaning fees. Anywhere from nothing (you mop) to $150. We charge $150, as does the Miners' Hall. Worth asking exactly what it covers. At some halls, even with a fee, you still wash the dishes and take the garbage.

  • Damage and security deposits. Usually refundable, but they tie up cash. Creekside asks for a damage deposit equal to the full rental 14 days before; St. Michael's asks for $675 in key and security deposits.

  • AV. A microphone for the speeches and a screen for the slideshow cost $250 at the Miners' Hall and $175 for sound at Creekside. Some venues include them. Ask.

  • Minimum hours. A "$66 an hour" room with a three-hour minimum is a $198 room.

  • Security and late-night surcharges. Creekside requires a $175 security patrol if alcohol is served after 10 PM.

  • Service charges and music licences. Venues with in-house catering typically add 18–20% to food, drink and sometimes the room, and some add a SOCAN/Re:Sound music fee.

  • Insurance. Town of Canmore rooms require $5 million in liability insurance naming the Town. One-day event policies start from about $65. (Note that Duuo, one of the most popular Canadian one-day event insurers, stops selling event insurance on December 1, 2026 if you've used it before, you'll need a different provider for 2027.)

  • Cancellation terms. At Creekside, cancelling within 180 days forfeits everything you've paid. At the Miners' Hall, the 50% deposit is non-refundable. Read these before you pay.

  • GST. 5%, on almost everything.

A good habit: before you pay a deposit anywhere, ask for the price all-in room, cleaning, AV, deposits and tax in writing. Canada's Competition Act now requires advertised prices to include every mandatory fee except taxes, so a venue should be able to give you that number without a fight.

The Alcohol Licence: Cheaper Than You Think

Almost every host we talk to worries about this, and it turns out to be one of the smallest costs of the party.

In Alberta, a private party in a rented hall — a birthday, shower, reunion or anniversary needs a Private Special Event Licence from AGLC. You apply online. There are two kinds:

  • Private non-sale — $10. Drinks are free for your guests and you don't charge admission. You can buy the alcohol from any liquor store (or bring homemade wine or beer).

  • Private resale — $25. Guests pay for drinks or admission. All the alcohol must come from a licensed liquor store.

You post the licence at the bar on the day. Minors can't be served or handle alcohol. You don't need a licence at all for a party in your own home.

The real cost of drinks isn't the licence — it's the venue's rules. If a venue insists on its own bar, you'll pay bar prices (MAINSPACE, for example, suggests budgeting around $70 a head for drinks, with individual drinks at $8–$16). If it requires a ProServe-certified bartender, as the Town does, you'll need to hire one and submit their certificate 30 days ahead. If it's BYO with no corkage, you pay liquor-store prices.

What Food Costs in Canmore

Catering is usually the biggest line in a party budget and the one hosts most often wish they'd spent more on. Rough Canmore numbers:

  • Buffet from a local diner or caterer: around $22–$29 per person for a hot buffet with salads, sides and dessert, plus an 18% gratuity and GST (Three Sisters Diner's published catering menu, but confirm current prices).

  • Set group menus at a restaurant: $43–$65 per person at The Bankhead's three set menus.

  • Grazing boards: $75 for a small board up to $550 for a large spread from WildGrazing; its afternoon-tea platter is $400. Popular for showers and cocktail-style birthdays, and they book up in fall.

  • Private chef: The Bankhead offers a private chef service for a $160 flat fee plus ingredients and travel, including cleanup.

  • High-end benchmark: MAINSPACE suggests budgeting around $120 per person for food at the top of the market.

Two tips from experience. First, if your venue allows outside food, you control the biggest cost of the party. A venue that forces in-house catering is often cheaper on room rent and more expensive overall. Second, most caterers bill the confirmed count or the actual count, whichever is higher, so don't pad your numbers.

Cake, Rentals, Music and Photos

  • Cake. JK Bakery's cakes run $33.95–$38.95, and its slab cakes serve 20–25 (quarter), 40–50 (half) or 80–100 (full). KAKE by Darci's custom cakes start at $150 for a 6-inch that serves 12, $335 for a two-tier (26 servings) and $533 for three tiers (41). KAKE is peanut-free but doesn't do vegan or gluten-free.

  • Rentals. If your venue includes tables and chairs, skip this line. If it doesn't, expect something like Something New Banff's $5.95 per white folding chair plus $350 for delivery and set-up in Canmore.

  • DJ. Bow Valley DJs mostly price for weddings; Livin' & Dancin' starts at $1,184 for a wedding with no travel charge inside the Bow Valley. For a birthday, a good playlist and the venue's sound system is often enough.

  • Photographer. A 45-to-60-minute session with a local photographer runs roughly $425–$800. For a reunion, Mike & Naty's extended-family session is $800 for 60 minutes in Canmore.

Split across 20 households, that's around $215 per household for the day, including the photos everyone will actually keep. If one of the organisers lives in Canmore, the 15% resident discount takes about $210 off the venue.

  • Go low season. In Canmore that's roughly January to the Friday before the May long weekend, and Thanksgiving to December 19. At our venue a Saturday full day drops from $1,400 to $950.

  • Go midweek. Peerspace's 2025 survey of 1,000 party hosts found the average Wednesday party cost $480 against $863 on a Saturday and venue rates follow the same curve.

  • Use the local discounts. Canmore residents get 15% off at our venue and Bow Valley residents 20% at the Miners' Hall. Non-profits get 50% at both. Spring Creek owners get 35% off with us.

  • Do the hourly-versus-day maths. Four hours at $200 an hour is $800; a half day is $700. Past about four hours, a day rate usually wins.

  • Pick a venue that includes the furniture and AV. Chairs at $5.95 each plus delivery, and $250 for a microphone and speakers, add up fast.

  • Bring your own drinks. A $10 licence and liquor-store prices beat a venue bar for most private parties.

Questions to Ask Any Venue Before You Pay a Deposit

  1. What's the all-in price, including cleaning, AV and taxes?

  2. What's included — tables, chairs, linens, dishes, sound, projector?

  3. Can I bring my own caterer, cake and alcohol? Is there corkage?

  4. What licence, insurance or bartender do you require?

  5. What time does the party have to end, and when can I get in to set up?

  6. What exactly do I have to clean before I leave?

  7. How much is the deposit, and what happens if I cancel?

  8. Is there parking, and is it free?

An Honest Note on Closing Times

Our venue closes at 10 PM, in respect of our Spring Creek neighbours and the Town's bylaws. For most birthdays, showers, reunions and anniversaries that's all you need — the party runs from mid-afternoon or early evening, and downtown Canmore is a short walk away afterwards. If you want a dance party until 1 AM, the Miners' Hall and Creekside both run until 2 AM, and St. Michael's until midnight — just budget for the cleanup, the deposits and, at Creekside, the security fee.
