How Much Does It Cost to Host a Yoga Retreat in Canmore?

8 min read

If you teach yoga in Calgary or the Bow Valley, a Canmore retreat is an easy sell to your students. It's close, it's beautiful, and nobody needs a passport. The hard part is the spreadsheet. Most "how to price your yoga retreat" guides are written for Bali or Costa Rica, and almost none of them give you a single real number, let alone the Canadian ones: GST, Alberta's tourism levy, insurance and what the booking platforms take. We run a retreat venue in Canmore, so we see the costs from the inside. This guide puts real 2026 prices on every line of a Canmore retreat budget, works through a full 14-person example, and shows how to set a price that pays you.

All figures are in Canadian dollars unless marked, and were checked in October 2026. Prices change, so treat them as a starting point and get quotes.

The Short Answer

For a three-night, 14-person yoga retreat in Canmore with private rooms, a venue for practice and mostly catered meals, the total cost lands around $18,000, or about $1,300 per participant, including paying yourself $3,000. A non-residential weekend (guests sleep at home or book their own rooms) can cost a fraction of that: a two-day venue booking for 14 people works out to about $146 per person.

Your three biggest costs, in order, are usually accommodation, food and the venue. Your three biggest risks are empty spots, platform fees and cancellations.

This is the line most facilitators underestimate, because the beautiful lodges around Canmore rarely sell their meeting room on its own. Your options:

  • A lodge buyout. Mount Engadine Lodge (up to 34 guests, all meals included) and Paintbox Lodge in Canmore (sleeps 21) work best as full buyouts. Everwild Canmore needs a minimum of 15 guests for a retreat and has a Flex Room for about 15. None publishes rates.

  • A hotel meeting room. Basecamp Lodge's Great Room holds up to 30 but closes at 6 PM, which rules out evening practice.

  • A rented hall or studio. CanMore Together's Studio Flex is $39 an hour or $329 a day; Creekside's Activity Room is $40 an hour (three-hour minimum) for up to 35; the Canmore Nordic Centre's Day Lodge rooms are $100 to $600 a day, though retreats there need written approval and athletic events take priority. At our venue, Spring Creek Opera House, a full day is $750 to $1,400 depending on season and day, plus a $150 cleaning fee, for a log-cabin hall with mountain windows, a sound system and a kitchen.

One cost to check early: Alberta's tourism levy does not apply to venue rental. The 6% levy covers accommodation, but the Government of Alberta exempts "a room that does not contain a bed" used for meetings or receptions.

Line 2: Accommodation

Retreat guests increasingly want their own room. In Retreat Guru's March 2026 industry report, private or single rooms were the most popular choice at 41.6% of registrations, against 24.6% for doubles and 8.8% for dorms. In Canmore, that means:

  • Condos. A two-bedroom condo runs roughly $150 to $200 a night in low season and $350 to $500 at peak, plus a cleaning fee of $50 to $100 (2026 short-term rental pricing guide). Peak periods (July, August and Christmas) are 2.5 to 3 times the base rate; November and early April are the cheapest.

  • Hotels. The Malcolm Hotel in Spring Creek has 124 rooms, steps from our door. Ask for a group rate once you need eight or more rooms.

  • Budget. The Alpine Club of Canada's clubhouse hostel sleeps 31 and markets itself to wellness retreats; it doesn't publish group rates.

The levy catches people out. From April 1, 2026, Alberta's tourism levy on accommodation rose from 4% to 6%. Some 2026 Canmore rental guides still say 4%. Budget 6%, plus 5% GST.

Line 3: Food

Food is where retreat guests notice quality, and it's where your margin goes if you're not careful. Canmore benchmarks:

  • Catered buffet: around $45 per person on average from a Canmore caterer such as Bow Valley Gourmet, which offers gluten-free and vegan menus. Plated meals average about $70.

  • Private chef: Take a Chef's Canmore average is about $183 per person for groups of 13 or more.

  • Self-catered breakfasts and lunches: if your guests stay in condos with kitchens, a shared grocery budget of around $40 per person per day goes a long way.

Mixing formats is the usual trick: one special chef's dinner, catered dinners on the other nights, and simple self-serve breakfasts and lunches.

Line 4: Insurance, Tax and the Rules Nobody Mentions

  • Liability insurance. Through the Canadian Yoga Alliance program with HUB International, annual cover costs $174 for $1 million, $204 for $2 million or $269 for $5 million (policy fee included), and adding retreat or class hosting costs $100. Note the exclusions: disease and contagion claims, and damage to the venue itself. $2 million is the norm; some facilities, including Town of Canmore rooms, require $5 million.

  • GST. You must register for GST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive quarters, and if you cross the line in a single quarter you charge GST on that sale. Two retreats in a year can do it: 14 guests at $1,500 is $21,000 each time. If you're a non-resident (an American teacher, for example), the CRA rules on admissions can require registration from the first dollar; check with an accountant.

  • Travel-seller rules. Only Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia regulate travel sellers, and those laws can apply if you sell to their residents. If your retreat bundles accommodation and you market it to students in Vancouver or Toronto, ask Consumer Protection BC or TICO whether you need to register.

  • Wine at dinner. In Alberta, serving alcohol at a private event in a rented hall needs an AGLC Private Special Event Licence: $10 if drinks are free, $25 if guests pay. If wine is bundled into a paid retreat package, ask AGLC which licence applies.

Line 5: Booking Platforms, and Why 2026 Changed the Maths

Retreat marketplaces bring you guests you wouldn't otherwise reach, but they take a large cut:

  • BookRetreats: hosts choose a commission of 20%, 25% or 30% (higher commission earns better search placement), plus a 3% payment processing fee, charged on the whole booking.

  • Retreat Guru: a 14% marketplace booking fee on registrations that come through retreat.guru; listing is free.

  • BookYogaRetreats: its parent company, Tripaneer, was declared bankrupt by a Dutch court on October 1, 2026, according to reports from several retreat platforms. Deposits that guests paid through the platform are tied up in the bankruptcy, and hosts may never receive their share.

Two lessons. First, price for the commission: if you need to net $1,293 per guest and sell through BookRetreats at 23%, your listed price has to be about $1,680. Second, sell directly to your own students wherever you can, and take deposits into your own account.

A practical note: BookRetreats' "10 Best Yoga Retreats in Canmore" page currently lists 30 retreats, and none of them is held in Canmore. If you run a real Canmore retreat, you'll stand out on the platforms.

Break-even price: about $1,295 per guest at 14 guests.

That number hides the real risk. Roughly $6,400 of the budget is fixed (venue, insurance, passes, your pay and contingency on them), and about $835 per guest moves with headcount (rooms, food, the hot springs and their share of contingency). So:

  • At $1,295, you only break even if all 14 spots sell. Lose one guest and you lose money.

  • At $1,495, you break even at 10 guests, and every guest after that adds about $660 of profit.

That's why the Yoga Alliance's retreat pricing framework suggests building in a 10 to 20% "sustainability margin", and why WeTravel's guidance is to plan to break even and pay yourself at 8 to 12 participants on a 15-spot retreat. BookRetreats' own host calculator tells facilitators to "plan for 75% occupancy" because very few retreats fill completely.

  • Go non-residential. Run Saturday and Sunday as day sessions and let local guests sleep at home. You remove the biggest line in the budget and the tourism levy with it. Retreat Guru's data shows only about 5% of two-day programs include an overnight stay: day-based retreats are normal.

  • Pick the shoulder season. November, January and early April are the cheapest months for Canmore lodging, and our venue's low-season rates apply from Thanksgiving to December 19 and from January 2 to the May long weekend.

  • Book the room, not the lodge. A hall plus condos lets you right-size: if only 10 people sign up, you book five condos, not a 34-bed buyout.

  • Use the non-profit rate if it applies. Registered non-profits and charities get 50% off our published rates.

  • Mix meal formats. One chef's dinner is the memory; the other meals can be simple.

When to Start Planning

The bsport retreat-planning guide recommends three to four months of lead time for a local retreat and six to twelve months for a destination one. For a Canmore retreat aimed at Calgary students, four to six months works well: enough time to sell, short enough that people commit.

Expect late sign-ups. In Retreat Guru's 2026 data, 39.1% of retreat registrations came within 29 days of the start date, and 22.9% in the final week. Set your early-bird deadline early enough to fund your deposits, and don't panic if the last few spots sell in the final month.

FAQs

How much does it cost to host a yoga retreat in Canmore?

A three-night, 14-person residential retreat with private rooms costs about $18,000, or $1,300 per participant, including the facilitator's pay. A non-residential weekend costs far less: a two-day venue booking for 14 people is about $146 per person.

How much should I charge for a yoga retreat in Canmore?

Charge enough to break even at about 70 to 75% of your spots. In our worked example, a price of $1,495 breaks even at 10 of 14 guests. If you sell through a marketplace, add its commission on top.

Do I need to charge GST on a yoga retreat in Alberta?

Only once you're registered. You must register when your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive quarters, and two retreats a year can push you over. Non-residents may need to register sooner.

Does Alberta's tourism levy apply to a retreat?

It applies to accommodation (6% for bookings made from April 1, 2026), but not to renting a meeting or practice room that doesn't contain a bed.

What insurance do I need to run a yoga retreat in Canada?

Professional and general liability, usually $2 million, with a retreat or event extension. Through the Canadian Yoga Alliance program, $2 million costs $204 a year plus $100 to add retreat hosting.
