How to Plan a Women's Wellness Retreat in Canmore

8 min read

More women are planning retreats than ever, and many of them aren't professional retreat leaders. They're naturopaths, coaches, yoga teachers and friends who want to gather their community somewhere that feels like a reset. Canmore is an obvious choice for anyone in Calgary: it's about an hour and twenty minutes away, it has the mountains without the national park pass, and it has a quietly excellent wellness scene.

This guide is for the organiser. It covers what women's retreats in the region actually charge, how to build a schedule around mountain light, which local practitioners to bring in, what to watch for on safety, and what it all costs. We run a wellness retreat venue in Canmore's Spring Creek neighbourhood, and we've written down what we'd tell a friend planning her first one.

What Women's Retreats in the Region Charge in 2026

Before you set a price, look at the market. These are real 2026 retreats in and around Canmore:

Residential weekends

Three price bands stand out:

  • Non-residential weekends: about $450 to $555. Guests sleep at home or book their own rooms. Groups of 8 to 12.

  • Residential weekends with shared rooms: about $525 to $925.

  • Multi-night retreats with lodging: about US$2,400 and up.

Notice that one Canmore organiser's October retreat still listed its venue as "TBA" on its booking page. Finding the room is often the last thing to fall into place. Book it first.

Who's Coming, and What They Want

BookRetreats' State of Retreats 2026 survey (U.S. retreat-goers) found that women's retreats outnumber men's nearly six to one, and women make up 60% of solo travellers. The top motivation was rest and relaxation (62%), followed by mental health (37%) and recovering from stress and burnout (35%). Cooking was the most popular skill to learn (51%), and contrast bathing (hot and cold) drew 47% of the interest in nature retreats.

That tells you how to design the programme: more rest, less schedule. A retreat for burnt-out women should not feel like a conference.

Step 1: Choose Residential or Non-Residential

This is the decision that sets your price.

  • Non-residential (guests sleep at home or book their own rooms) is how most local Canmore women's retreats run. It keeps the price under $600, opens the retreat to women who can't be away overnight, and means you never have to manage room assignments. Retreat Guru's 2026 industry data found only about 5% of two-day programs include an overnight stay.

  • Residential is more immersive, but lodging becomes your biggest cost. Canmore condos run roughly $150 to $200 a night in low season and $350 to $500 at peak, and since April 2026 Alberta's tourism levy on accommodation is 6%, plus GST.

A useful middle path: run the programme as non-residential, and give out-of-town guests a short list of places to stay within walking distance of your venue.

Step 2: Pick Your Season

Season

For a women's retreat

January to April

Quiet, cosy and the best value. Short days (under eight hours of daylight in December), so plan indoor afternoons.

May and June

Long evenings: sunset is close to 10 PM in late June. Lovely for evening walks and firepit circles.

July and August

Peak prices and crowds. Fire bans are common, so a closing fire can't be guaranteed.

Mid-September to early October

Larch season turns the high country gold. It is also elk rut season in the Bow Valley.

Mid-October to December

Low-season rates, early sunsets for candlelit evening sessions, and a natural "reset before the holidays" theme.

Step 3: Build Your Schedule Around Mountain Light

Mountain towns have a quirk most schedule templates ignore: the official sunrise isn't when the light reaches you. The sun has to clear the peaks first. Plan "sunrise" yoga for first light, not for the time on your phone. Canmore's 2026 sunrise and sunset times (AlpenglowApp) give you the frame:

This mirrors the rhythm used by established wellness retreats, such as the published day at Ontario's Grail Springs (movement before 10 AM, workshop after lunch, meditation after dinner), with long rest periods built in.

Step 4: Bring in Local Practitioners

Canmore has a deep bench of wellness practitioners. Some with published 2026 prices:

  • Forest bathing: Forest Fix's private sessions run 2 to 2.5 hours and cost $79 per person for groups of six or more. The guide is certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy and the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Check seasonal availability for your dates.

  • Sound bath: Grounded Resonance offers private events across Canmore, Banff and Calgary from $495, including a 60-minute sound bath.

  • Nature walks: Canmore Trails and Tales runs walks from $89 (including "Nature by Nightfall") and a half-day "Intro to Bear Country" for $250, with private tours available.

  • Indigenous-led walks: Buffalo Stone Woman and Mahikan Trails both offer guided experiences in the Bow Valley.

  • Spa time: Bodhi Wellness in Canmore includes access to its two outdoor hot pools and a eucalyptus steam room with every treatment, and takes group bookings for "girls' weekends". The Kananaskis Nordic Spa in Kananaskis Village (adults only) offers a full hot-and-cold circuit; check current prices and closures before you build it in.

  • Cooking: The Co+Kitchen in Canmore runs hands-on classes and private events, a good fit given that cooking is the top skill retreat-goers want to learn.

Step 5: Know the Local Conditions

These are the things a Calgary organiser might not know, and they matter for a group.

  • Grassi Lakes is closed. It's the easy hike most Canmore guides recommend, but a rockslide closed the day-use area and trails "until further notice" in June 2026, and the Alberta Parks trail report still showed it closed at last update. Plan on the Policeman's Creek boardwalk or Quarry Lake instead.

  • Elk and bears. During the elk rut (roughly late August through October), Parks Canada advises staying at least 30 metres from elk and never walking between a bull and the cows. Explore Canmore advises about 100 metres from bears. Carry bear spray in a holster, not a pack.

  • Fire bans. Canmore and Kananaskis issue fire bans in dry summers. Check albertafirebans.ca or the Alberta Fire Bans app the week of your retreat and have a candle-lit indoor alternative to the fire circle.

  • Passes. Canmore itself needs no park pass. Outings into Kananaskis need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass ($15 per vehicle per day), and Banff National Park needs a Parks Canada pass ($24.50 per vehicle per day for a group of up to seven).

  • Altitude. Canmore sits around 1,300 to 1,400 metres. Most people won't notice, but remind guests to drink more water than usual, especially with sauna or hot-pool time.

  • Medical care. Canmore General Hospital, at 1100 Hospital Place, has a 24-hour emergency department.

  • Quarry Lake parking. It's $20 for two hours for non-residents from mid-May to mid-October, and the Kananaskis pass doesn't cover it.

Step 6: Do the Budget

For the sample weekend above, with 12 women, here's what the core costs come to per person:

Item

Calculation

Per person

Saturday full day $950 + Sunday half day $700 + $150 cleaning = $1,800

$150

Forest bathing

$79 per person (groups of 6+)

$79

Sound bath

From $495 ÷ 12

$41

Catered meals (2 lunches, 1 dinner)

About $45 per person per meal (Canmore buffet average)

$135

Core cost before GST, insurance and your pay

$405

At a price of $555 (the top of the local non-residential range), that leaves about $150 per guest, or $1,800 across 12 women, to cover your time, insurance, marketing and a small margin. That's why most local organisers keep groups at 8 to 12, keep catering simple, and charge $500 or more. If you're registered for GST, add 5% to the guest price. If you're a registered non-profit or charity, our venue rate drops by 50%, which takes the venue line to $75 per guest.

When you visit a venue, ask:

  1. Is the whole space ours, or will another group be next door?

  2. How many mats fit for a gentle practice?

  3. Can we control the light for evening sound baths and yoga nidra?

  4. Is there outdoor space for a circle or a quiet sit?

  5. Can we bring our own caterer, and is there a kitchen to serve from?

  6. What time can we start, and how late can we stay?

  7. Are we close enough to walk to lodging and trails?

  8. What are the deposit and cancellation terms?

FAQs

How much does a women's wellness retreat cost in Alberta?

Local non-residential weekends in Canmore run about $450 to $555. Residential weekends with shared rooms run about $525 to $925, and multi-night retreats with lodging start around US$2,400.

What do you do at a wellness retreat?

Most combine gentle movement (yoga, breathwork, walking), time in nature, nourishing meals, a workshop or two, and plenty of rest. In Canmore that often means forest bathing, a sound bath, a hot-pool or spa session and a closing circle.

What does a wellness retreat schedule look like?

Movement in the morning, a nature session before lunch, a workshop in the early afternoon, unstructured rest, then restorative practice, dinner and a calm evening session such as a sound bath.

Is Grassi Lakes open for retreat groups?

Not at last report. A rockslide closed the Grassi Lakes day-use area and trails in June 2026. Check the Alberta Parks trail report before planning around it.

Do we need a park pass for a retreat in Canmore?

Not for Canmore itself. Kananaskis outings need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass, and Banff National Park needs a Parks Canada pass.
