Planning a wedding in the mountains has a few wrinkles a city checklist will miss: peak seasons that book out, guests who need to travel and stay, and Alberta rules that are simpler than most couples expect. Here is the full timeline we walk our couples through, tuned for Canmore and the Bow Valley.

How Far in Advance Should You Plan a Canmore Wedding?

For a peak summer or larch-season Saturday, give yourself 12 to 18 months, mostly so you can lock the venue and a block of guest rooms before they fill. An intimate or off-season wedding can come together in a few months. The single biggest constraint here is not the venue alone, it is guest accommodation during our busy stretches. 12 to 18 Months Out: Foundation

• Set a realistic budget and a guest-count range.

• Reserve a block of guest rooms early, because Canmore hotels fill fast in summer and ski season.
  

9 to 11 Months Out: Book Your Key Vendors

• Photographer and videographer first, they book the furthest ahead, even if you're planning an intimate wedding in Canmore

• Marriage commissioner or officiant. Commissioners get snapped up quickly for larch-season and long-weekend dates.

• Caterer, and a planner or day-of coordinator if you want one.
  

6 to 8 Months Out: Guest Experience

• Send invitations and build a simple wedding website with travel, parking, and weather notes.

• Confirm room blocks and share driving directions from Calgary.

• Choose attire, and remember layers for cool mountain evenings.

3 to 5 Months Out: Details and Design

• Florals, decor, and cake.

1 to 2 Months Out: Confirm and Make It Legal

Buy your Alberta marriage licence in this window. It costs $40 plus a small registry-agent fee, has no waiting period, and is valid for three months, so timing it about a month before the wedding is ideal. You need two witnesses aged 18 or older. Confirm every vendor, finalize the timeline, and build your seating plan.

Local tip.  Do not buy your marriage licence too early. It is only valid for three months from the day you buy it, so a licence purchased eight months out will expire before your date. One month before is the sweet spot.

The Final Week and Day Of

• Hold a short rehearsal and confirm arrival times.

• Put the licence, rings, and a small emergency kit with one trusted person.

• Share the day-of timeline with your vendors and wedding party.

Mountain-Specific To-Dos Couples Forget

• You do not need a park permit in Canmore. Canmore is outside Banff National Park, so there is no Parks Canada wedding permit to file. Inside the park, a ceremony registration is required, which is one more reason couples choose town.

• Tell guests about winter driving. For any date from November to April, note winter tires and extra travel time on the highway from Calgary.

• Plan your ceremony around sunset. Daylight swings from very long in June to short in December, so set the start time to the season.

• Small stuff: bug spray for early-summer evenings, sunscreen and lip balm for the high-altitude sun, and a wind plan for anything paper.
